Dezna's Castle brief historical
On the top of the Castel's Hill,on the right side of Dezna's Valley you can see the ruins of a stronghold that has stand up for centuries defying the time and people. The genesis of the castle it is hard to be said because the initial form is unknown. If we study it's location on the top of a hill, where it could be very well defende from three sides, we could say it was built in time of the dacians. But a thing is for sure: the castle was rebuilt in 13-th century during hungarian occupation. Because of the nomadic populations, hungarian king Bela the 4-th, rebuilted the castle and improved it.
The castle is first mentioned in 1318, later than
the village Dezna that is first mentioned in
1216.In that period of time the castle was very
important in this area and a lot of villages from
around were subordinated to the castle. Dezna castle was very important because it was the property of the hungarian king. Around the year 1340 the castle was administered by Senye a duke that took place of Iwanka that was the administrator before. After that Dezna and the castle is mentioned belonging to Losonczy family, a noble family from Transilvania. The taxes and dues imposed to the people were very high and that's why a lot of brigands were in the forests around taking money from the nobles and giving it to the poor ones.
After the battle from Mohacs from 1526 for a short
period of time the castle was under turkish
domination this domination was going to last until
1693 when the castle was abandoned.
A legend tells us that the turkish gathered here about 100 girls from around the villages to be taken to the sultan's harem, these girls found out about their plan and decided to blow up the castle. One of the girls went into the basement and set on fire the gun powder that was there destroying a lot from the castle and most of them died. The girls saved their dignity and honour with the price of their lives. After 1700 the castle was abandoned because it didn't showed any interes, all the daily activity transfered into the village .
